Workers Union urges government intervention over Michelin layoff plan

Indonesia is experiencing labour unrest following plans for large-scale layoffs at Michelin Indonesia, prompting responses from workers' unions and calls for Government involvement.
President of the All-Indonesia Workers Union, Mirah Sumirat, expressed concern regarding the dismissal of hundreds of workers, stating that the protests at the factory were driven by concern over the potential loss of livelihoods for thousands of workers' families amid challenging economic conditions.
Mirah stated that layoffs should be used only as a last resort, rather than being implemented unilaterally without open and fair dialogue. She also stated that multinational companies such as Michelin should consider their social and moral responsibilities.
"Workers are not just numbers in efficiency reports, but individuals who have contributed to the company's operations," Mirah said in a written statement on November 4th, 2025.
She further stated that the union urges the Government, particularly the Ministry of Manpower, to facilitate tripartite negotiations between company management, labour unions, and the Government. She noted that this measure is necessary to reach a constructive industrial relations outcome in accordance with labour regulations.
Mirah also stated that global corporations such as Michelin should adhere to the principle of supporting the national workforce. She stated that Indonesia is not only a manufacturing location, but a place where millions of workers contribute to the global supply chain.
"Maintaining employment stability supports economic stability and community welfare. Decisions by global corporations should not negatively affect existing social structures," Mirah said.
She further added that families rely on workers' employment, and that uncertainty should be avoided through unilateral decisions. "All parties should work together to ensure that fairness and appropriate working conditions remain in place," she said.
Mirah stated that Michelin's workers should continue to seek fair outcomes while safeguarding their rights.
