While Ford Motor Company and General Motors continue to reassess their strategies in China, Stellantis is expanding its presence in the world's largest automotive market.
Stellantis, the manufacturer of the Jeep, Ram and Peugeot brands, has announced two initiatives that indicate a different strategy from its American rivals. The developments come at a time when the global automotive industry is facing tariff pressures, changing consumer demand and the transition towards electric vehicles, prompting major automakers to reassess manufacturing locations and partnerships.
Stellantis expands manufacturing operations in China
Stellantis and Dongfeng Group have agreed to expand their existing partnership. The two companies, which have collaborated for more than three decades, signed a strategic cooperation agreement to manufacture Peugeot and Jeep-branded electric vehicles at a factory in Wuhan.
Production is expected to begin in 2027, with two new Peugeot battery electric vehicles and two Jeep off-road electric models initially scheduled for production.
The Peugeot models will be based on design concepts showcased at the Beijing Auto Show 2026. Both the Peugeot and Jeep models are intended for customers in China as well as export markets globally. The total investment associated with the project exceeds eight billion Chinese yuan, equivalent to approximately one billion euros. Stellantis is expected to contribute around 130 million euros towards the project. The two companies also signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding to explore future cooperation, including shared scale, research and development resources.
Antonio Filosa described the move as an extension of the existing partnership.
"With a track record of more than 30 years of collaboration and shared automotive expertise, Stellantis and Dongfeng are ready to expand cooperation and introduce new vehicles with EV technologies from established brands."
Stellantis expands partnership with Leapmotor
Days before the Dongfeng announcement, Stellantis and Leapmotor announced plans to expand their partnership. Stellantis became Leapmotor's largest shareholder in October 2023 after acquiring an approximately 21% stake in the company.
