Tesla battery repurposing plant proposed near Tonsley innovation precinct

The City of Marion in South Australia (SA) has been approached by the property developer MAB CCT, which has proposed the construction of a facility for Tesla.
The proposed development includes a factory for the repurposing of Tesla batteries, as well as a vehicle showroom and service centre.
The proposed site is located adjacent to the Tonsley Innovation Precinct (TIP), where Tesla currently operates a service hub.
It supports the monitoring and servicing of the company's Supercharger lithium-ion battery stations across South Australia, residential Powerwall installations, and Tesla vehicles.
The enquiry follows Tesla's announcement, made two months earlier, regarding its intention to establish a re-manufacturing facility in Collie, Western Australia (WA). The facility is intended to initially service the company's Megapack batteries.
In February 2025, Tesla signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Government of Western Australia to construct the facility by 2026.
It is planned to be located adjacent to Neoen's 2.2 GWh Collie battery energy storage system (BESS), situated 200 kilometres south of Perth, which utilises Megapack technology.
Tesla currently manufactures its Megapack grid-scale batteries in California, producing 10,000 units per year under volume production.
The company has also commenced operations at a second factory in Shanghai, China, and dispatched its first shipment of Megapack batteries to Australia on 21st March 2025. The Shanghai facility is intended to serve both the domestic Chinese market and the wider Asia-Pacific region.
