Tata Motors focuses on EVs but may introduce hybrids based on demand

Tata Motors has primarily focused on battery electric vehicles (BEVs) as its chosen path for alternate energy powertrains. However, this does not indicate an exclusive reliance on a single technology.
The company may evaluate the introduction of hybrid powertrains depending on evolving market conditions.
Shailesh Chandra, Managing Director of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles and Tata Passenger Electric Mobility, stated, "We will be hoping to use the technology to deliver value to the customer, and obviously it [hybrids] would be under consideration for different products at different points in time."
He further remarked, "From a powertrain mix perspective, we have categorised hybrids under petrol. If competitiveness requires us, in certain segments, to introduce hybrids, we will do so. The decision may be based not only on emission requirements but also on performance considerations."
According to Tata's internal estimates, electric vehicles are projected to account for 30% of total sales, followed by compressed natural gas (CNG) models at 27%. Diesel-powered vehicles are expected to contribute 6-10%, while the remainder will consist of petrol and hybrid models.
Chandra added, "We will be hoping to use the [hybrid] technology to meet the value we would be hoping to deliver to the customer. We operate in a competitive market. We are not opposed to any particular technology but are concerned about the use of incentives that benefit technologies already capable of standing on their own."
He concluded, "Our focus is electric vehicles. We view this as the end-solution technology, and we believe it is necessary to intensify our efforts in this direction. We consider hybrids as one of the technologies that could enhance the competitiveness of internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. If market demand arises, we are prepared to respond accordingly."
