Odisha to launch EV policy 2.0, targets 50% EV registrations by 2036
Economic Times, 26 Jun '25
The Government of Odisha is preparing to introduce an updated Electric Vehicle (EV) Policy 2.0, with a target of achieving a 50% share of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) in all new vehicle registrations by 2036, according to a report published by a local daily.
An official statement issued on 25th June confirmed that the state is revising its Odisha EV Policy 2021.
The revision focuses on extending the policy's validity and adjusting incentives for EV buyers and Charge Point Operators (CPOs). The updated policy is intended to increase the rate of EV adoption in the state.
A meeting was held in Bhubaneswar to review the roadmap for EV growth. The meeting was chaired by Usha Padhee, Principal Secretary, Commerce and Transport, and Vishal Kumar Dev, Principal Secretary, Energy.
Senior officials from both departments took part in discussions concerning strategies for Odisha's transition to electric mobility.
EV adoption in the state
EV adoption in Odisha has increased from 1.16% of new vehicle registrations in 2021 to 8.71% as of 20th June 2025. The state currently has more than 550 public charging stations (PCS), including infrastructure provided by two-wheeler original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), oil marketing companies, and power utilities.
To expand the charging infrastructure, the State Transport Authority (STA) has issued a request for proposal (RFP) for the development of EV charging stations at selected locations across the state.
The revised EV policy will follow a broad approach, addressing supply-side measures such as support for local manufacturing and demand-side measures including consumer incentives, with the aim of increasing EV adoption in Odisha.
