Renault, JSW in early talks for possible India automotive joint venture
Economic Times, 7 Jul '25
French automaker Renault is reportedly in early-stage discussions with the JSW Group regarding a potential joint venture in India, as the company seeks to expand its operations in the Indian automotive market while restructuring its alliance with Nissan Motor, according to a media report citing sources familiar with the matter.
The discussions, which remain at a preliminary stage, indicate Renault's interest in pursuing more independent operations in India.
As part of this strategy, the company is in the process of acquiring Nissan's stake in their jointly owned manufacturing facility in Chennai.
This follows a March agreement to reduce cross-shareholding between Renault and Nissan from 15% to 10% each, as both companies continue to revise the terms of their global partnership.
JSW's role in the automotive sector
The JSW Group, led by Sajjan Jindal, holds a 35% stake in MG Motor India through a joint venture with China's SAIC Motor. The group is pursuing additional partnerships aimed at increasing its presence in the electric vehicle sector, in line with its activities across the steel, infrastructure, and energy industries.
Renault in the Indian market
Renault's operations in India are limited, with sales of approximately 38,000 vehicles in FY25 - representing less than 1% of the domestic passenger vehicle market.
The company exports to markets in Africa and the Asia-Pacific region from India and has opened a design studio at its Chennai technology centre.
Renault has previously engaged in joint ventures in India, including with Mahindra & Mahindra and Nissan. The current discussions with JSW are consistent with this approach, as the company assesses options for its India operations.
A decision on future partnerships may be linked to the upcoming appointment of a successor to Chief Executive Officer Luca de Meo, who has prioritised profitability and expansion in selected markets.
