On 20th January, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. welcomed the entry of American electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer Tesla into the Philippines, describing it as a significant step towards a more environmentally friendly transportation system in the country.
He also recognised it as an important development in addressing climate change, as he officiated the launch of the Tesla Center Philippines at Bonifacio Global City in Taguig.
"While electric vehicles are currently considered premium products, Tesla's entry into the Philippine market represents more than just the introduction of high-tech cars. It marks a step towards long-term transformation into a more environmentally friendly transportation system," Marcos stated.
The President emphasised that Tesla's decision to invest in the Philippines reflects recognition of the country's potential, supported by progressive policies and a shared commitment to innovation.
Marcos also highlighted the government's adoption of strategic measures to support sustainable transportation, including the removal of excise taxes on electric vehicle batteries under the TRAIN Law, the suspension of tariffs on pure electric or hybrid four-wheel and motorcycle EVs until 2028, and the implementation of the Comprehensive Roadmap for the Electric Vehicle Industry.
This roadmap aims to achieve a 50 percent electric vehicle market share in the Philippines by 2040 under a clean energy scenario.
"As Tesla establishes its presence and as we invest in infrastructure and implement supportive policies, competition will increase. What may seem aspirational today - having half of the vehicles on our streets as EVs - will become achievable in the future," he remarked.
The President also expressed hope that Tesla may eventually manufacture its electric vehicles in the Philippines, noting that an increasingly supportive environment for the EV industry is being created in the country.
"The presence of Tesla will contribute not only to environmental sustainability but also to the development of the local workforce. Each hire represents an investment in Filipino talent that will drive this transition forward. With plans to expand further, Tesla is helping to build a generation of Filipinos equipped to lead the global shift towards sustainable technologies," he said.
The Philippines is Tesla's fourth market in the ASEAN region, following Singapore, Thailand, and Malaysia.
