Citroen India has begun exporting the Basalt coupe-SUV to the South African market, making it the fourth model in its line-up to be shipped overseas from the country.

The first shipment of the Basalt, comprising 500 units, has been dispatched from the company's Chennai manufacturing facility, taking total exports to South Africa to 10,000 units.

Citroen India has already been exporting the C3, Aircross and eC3 to African markets and ASEAN countries, including Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand, Cambodia, Malaysia, Singapore and the Philippines. The Aircross and C3 are also exported to Nepal.

Shailesh Hazela, CEO and MD of Stellantis India, stated: "Commencing Basalt exports to South Africa forms part of Stellantis India's manufacturing, sourcing and export operations. As export volumes increase, the focus remains on developing an integrated ecosystem covering vehicles and components, supported by a consistent supply process."

Details

The Basalt for the South African market retains its name but omits the 'X' suffix. While the coupe-SUV is offered in You, Plus and Max trims in India, the South Africa-specification model does not include the You trim and is available exclusively with the 112 PS turbo-petrol engine paired with a six-speed automatic gearbox.

In contrast, the India-specification Basalt is also offered with a turbo-petrol manual transmission, along with an 83 PS naturally aspirated petrol engine option.

The cabin layout differs between the two markets. In addition to different interior colour schemes, the South Africa-specification Basalt excludes several features available in the Indian model, including front-seat ventilation, an optional 360-degree camera, an AI assistant, a wireless phone charger, one-touch operation for all four windows, connected car technology and adjustable rear-seat under-thigh support. The India-specification Basalt is equipped with leatherette upholstery, while the South African version is fitted with fabric upholstery.
