Valeo expands Pune facility to boost local EV component production
Autocar Professional, 8 Apr '25
Automotive technology supplier Valeo has expanded its operations in India with the inauguration of new state-of-the-art manufacturing and assembly lines at its Pune facility, reinforcing its commitment to advancing electrification within the Indian automotive sector.
The upgraded facility will focus on the production of the innovative 3-in-1 Combo unit - an integrated system that combines On-Board Chargers (OBCs), DC-DC Converters, and Power Distribution Units (PDUs) for electric vehicles. This technological advancement aims to provide more competitive solutions for Indian automotive manufacturers while significantly increasing domestic value addition.
Xavier Dupont, Chief Executive Officer of Valeo's Power Division and Group Executive Vice President, officiated at the inauguration ceremony alongside Jayakumar G, Group President and Managing Director of Valeo India. Dupont reaffirmed the company's commitment to supporting India's transition to electric mobility.
"Valeo is dedicated to supporting xEV growth in India. The company provides clients with the latest technologies for safer and more sustainable mobility. Through investment in new production capabilities, Valeo is proud to contribute to the Make in India initiative," stated Dupont. He also congratulated the Valeo Power teams on their efforts in advancing electrified mobility.
Jayakumar G highlighted the collaborative effort behind this achievement, stating, "This milestone reflects the strong collaboration between Valeo's global and Indian teams in establishing these advanced manufacturing lines. The teams have been trained in these new technologies and are prepared for the upcoming production ramp-up. Sincere gratitude is extended to our customers for their continued support. As India accelerates its xEV transformation, Valeo remains committed to delivering innovative solutions for a sustainable future."
Advanced manufacturing capabilities
The expanded Pune facility incorporates advanced automation, smart manufacturing processes, and sustainable production practices.
By localising key power electronic components, Valeo aims to reduce import dependence, streamline supply chains, and deliver cost-effective solutions to original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) seeking to accelerate electric vehicle adoption in India.
This initiative aligns with the Government's Make in India policy and supports the long-term development of the country's electric vehicle ecosystem.
Valeo's 3-in-1 Combo unit represents a significant technological innovation by integrating three critical components into a single compact system:
1. On-board charger (OBC) - Converts alternating current (AC) from the grid into direct current (DC) to charge the high-voltage battery (ranging from 7kW to 22kW).
2. DC-DC converter - Converts high-voltage power into 12V for auxiliary systems and for charging the low-voltage battery.
3. Power distribution Unit (PDU) - Efficiently distributes power to key components of the electric vehicle.
The modular design enhances efficiency by enabling component sharing across systems, reducing spatial requirements, weight, and cost, while improving overall performance. This compact unit is expected to be deployed across a variety of electric vehicle models manufactured in India.
Valeo has operated in India since 1997 and currently manages eight production facilities and a global research and development centre across Chennai, Bangalore, Pune, Sanand, and Gurgaon.
The company employs over 7,000 individuals in India, nearly half of whom are engineers dedicated to advancing automotive technology innovation.
