Uno Minda has announced plans to establish a greenfield manufacturing facility in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Maharashtra, for high-voltage electric powertrain products for four-wheeler passenger vehicles.
The facility will be established through the company's subsidiary, Uno Minda Auto Innovations, and will manufacture and assemble Electric Drive Units (EDUs) and Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT) systems. The company stated that the expansion is supported by new orders for EDU and DHT systems from a key anchor customer.
Uno Minda has earmarked an investment of Rs. 5.5 billion (US$ 57.12 million) for the project, which will be funded through a combination of debt and equity. The capital expenditure will be carried out in phases over the next two years, with commissioning of the plant targeted for Q2 FY28.
The announcement marks the second EV powertrain facility planned by Uno Minda Auto Innovations in recent months. The company is also establishing a plant at Khed City in Pune, Maharashtra, which is expected to commence operations in the second half of FY27.
Uno Minda stated that the expansion is related to increasing demand for electrified powertrains, including battery electric vehicles (BEVs), hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) and range-extended EVs (REEVs).
Commenting on the development, Ravi Mehra, Managing Director of Uno Minda, stated that the company is expanding its manufacturing capacity and EV powertrain product range while increasing the localisation of high-voltage systems in India.
