The Cambodian government and Japanese automaker Toyota are discussing a potential expansion of the company's manufacturing operations in Cambodia to include electric vehicle (EV) and hybrid models.

The prospect was discussed during a meeting recently, in Phnom Penh between Mines and Energy Minister Keo Rottanak and Toyota Cambodia President Kensuke Tsuchiya. The discussions covered Toyota's current and future vehicle production and use in Cambodia, particularly in the hybrid and electric vehicle sectors.

"The discussion focused on the current and future production and use of Toyota vehicles in Cambodia, particularly in the hybrid and electric vehicle sectors," Rottanak said.

Toyota currently operates an assembly plant in the Royal Group Phnom Penh Special Economic Zone through Toyota Tsusho Manufacturing Cambodia. The facility was launched in 2024 to assemble conventional combustion-engine models such as the Fortuner and Hilux. The company has since expanded its domestic production capacity and increased its integration with local supply chains.

The Ministry of Mines and Energy and Toyota are continuing discussions on the production and use of hybrid and electric vehicles in Cambodia. Toyota has operated in Cambodia for 33 years. Rottanak said the company has invested nearly US$ 100 million and employs 1,120 people locally.

"Toyota has invested nearly US$ 100 million and provided good jobs for 1,120 people locally. This is a partner that the Royal Government of Cambodia supports and encourages to continue expanding," Rottanak said.

The National Policy on the Development of the Electric Vehicle Sector 2024-2030 aims to increase the number of EVs in Cambodia to 770,000 by 2030.
