The collaboration between Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indonesia and Contemporary Amperex Technology represents a development in Indonesia's electric vehicle battery industry.
The initiative focuses on battery production at the cell and module levels, whereas most battery projects in Indonesia have remained at the battery pack assembly stage.
"We are investing IDR 1.3 trillion (US$ 76 million) in machines used to produce cells and modules at CATL. The entire investment is ours," said TMMIN President Director Nandi Julyanto in Jakarta on April 20th, 2026.
He stated that the cooperation scheme involves placing production machinery from TMMIN at partner facilities.
"The arrangement involves placing production equipment with a supplier, similar to providing a mould. CATL will operate the equipment, while the investment is provided by us. This marks the initial stage, focusing on cell and module production rather than battery packs," Nandi stated.
For the initial phase, battery production is targeted to begin in the second half of this year. However, no details have yet been provided regarding the vehicle models that will utilise locally produced batteries.
"Production is scheduled for the second half of the year. Details regarding modules and volumes will be announced in due course," he further added.
The introduction of cell and module production is expected to increase industrial value addition and support the downstream development of the domestic automotive sector. The collaboration between Toyota and CATL aligns with Toyota's multi-pathway approach to reducing carbon emissions, which includes the development of technologies ranging from hybrid electric vehicles to battery electric vehicles.
Local battery production is expected to support improved cost competitiveness for electrified vehicles and contribute to increased adoption in the domestic market.
"We expect this collaboration to contribute to Indonesia by strengthening the competitiveness of the national supply chain, supporting downstream development, contributing to economic growth, increasing local content value, and supporting energy security, in line with national priorities," Nandi stated. "The company remains committed to growing in Indonesia by supporting sustainable mobility solutions and contributing to future development," he further added.
