Stellantis has announced the export of the Peugeot 408 from Malaysia to Taiwan, marking the third Asian market for the Gurun-assembled model after Thailand in 2024 and Cambodia in 2025.
The 408 is powered by an updated 1.6-litre PureTech turbo engine compliant with Euro 6 standards.
This configuration produces 225 PS, compared with 218 PS in the local market, aligning output with the plug-in hybrid variant while maintaining a kerb weight of 168 kg, according to the company.
Backed by a MYR 7 million (US$ 1.8 million) investment, the Stellantis Gurun plant has undergone upgrades to its manufacturing line, including specialised research and development for powertrain calibration and localisation of parts.
The company stated that additional Asia Pacific markets are under evaluation for future exports.
"Our vision to transform Gurun into a key regional driver is taking shape, supported by strategic investments to upgrade this vital facility for both local and export production. This latest development emphasises our commitment to scaling production outputs in Malaysia while extending the breadth of brands and models within the Stellantis portfolio to meet the diverse needs of the region," said Isaac Yeo, Managing Director of Stellantis ASEAN.
Stellantis aims to achieve full production capacity at the Gurun plant, targeting exports of 280,000 vehicles to 20 countries across the Asia Pacific region by 2028.
The facility is capable of producing battery-electric vehicles, internal combustion engine models and mild hybrids.
The Kedah plant will also host CKD assembly of Leapmotor electric vehicles, beginning with the C10 SUV, supported by a dedicated MYR 23.4 million investment.
