Overcoming challenges for electric public transport in urban areas

There are mixed opinions surrounding the suspension of four-wheeled electric tourist vehicles in several provinces.
While traffic safety is paramount, this situation prompts reflection on the broader development of electric vehicles in urban areas. The operation of public electric transport (including electric bikes and electric cars) faces various obstacles and challenges.
So where exactly are the difficulties, and what are the reasons for these obstacles? Electric buses rolling out (even on a trial basis) carry with them hopes for a smoke-free public transport system. Electric vehicles, in general, need more attention and support to thrive and develop sustainably.
Not only in Ho Chi Minh City but across the country, there is a goal to gradually replace internal combustion engine vehicles, including motorcycles, with electric alternatives. One of the first types of vehicles targeted for this transition is buses.
Both tourists and local residents want to travel on smooth-riding vehicles with near-zero emissions. Electric cars offer numerous advantages, including minimal noise, making them particularly appealing to those who are prone to motion sickness.
The first electric bus route, D4, was chosen by Ho Chi Minh City as a pilot project. Last year, it had to propose increasing subsidies to continue operations. Now, things have improved, and passenger numbers on this route are stable and increasing.
Additionally, 17 new electric bus routes have been introduced, connecting 14 stations of metro line 1. Given the success of D4, it would be wise to leverage this momentum to promote electric buses, taxis, and ride-hailing services.
In reality, electric vehicles are becoming more familiar and well-received by passengers. Shuttle services to bus stations, train stations, and airports should also utilise electric vehicles. Every beginning is challenging, but I believe that these difficulties will lead to effective solutions.
Removing obstacles for electric buses also alleviates challenges for the entire public transport sector, creating a positive effect for the "green living" movement. This will strengthen public confidence as they boldly transition from petrol vehicles to electric ones. With today's positive changes, urban residents can look forward to a future with reduced pollution.
