Toyota Vietnam drops diesel Fortuner, shifts Camry, Alphard to hybrids

Toyota Vietnam has streamlined its local model range by removing several variants of the Camry, Alphard and Fortuner.
The company no longer offers diesel-powered Fortuner models, while the Camry and Alphard are now available exclusively with hybrid powertrains. The move follows the discontinuation of the manual transmission version of the Toyota Wigo late last year, leaving only the automatic variant available for sale.
For the Camry, the only remaining version is the hybrid HEV Top, priced at VND 1.46 billion (US$ 55,510). The HEV Mid and petrol-powered 2.0Q variants have been removed from the line-up.
Toyota Vietnam confirmed the changes but did not disclose the reason. However, the decision appears to form part of a broader effort to streamline the company's product portfolio while placing greater emphasis on electrified vehicles.
According to figures from the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers' Association (VAMA), hybrid models represented 81.2% of total Camry sales during the first five months of 2026.
Late last year, Toyota Vietnam also announced plans to invest approximately US$ 360 million to expand its manufacturing facilities and production lines for hybrid vehicles, making the Camry's transition to a hybrid-only model consistent with the company's longer-term strategy.
The streamlined range is also intended to improve business efficiency as Vietnam's D-segment sedan market continues to contract. The Camry and Kia K5 are now the only mainstream models remaining following the discontinuation of the Mazda6 and Honda Accord due to weak sales.
The Alphard has undergone a similar change, with the conventional petrol variant being discontinued in favour of the hybrid model, which is priced at VND 4.415 billion.
Toyota has also removed all diesel-powered Fortuner variants from its Vietnamese line-up. The SUV is now offered exclusively with a 2.7-litre petrol engine across three variants: two rear-wheel-drive automatic versions and one four-wheel-drive automatic model.
The Fortuner 2.7 Auto 4x2 is priced at VND 1.155 billion, while the Fortuner Legender 2.7 Auto 4x2 costs VND 1.29 billion and the Fortuner Legender 2.7 Auto 4x4 is priced at VND 1.395 billion. These prices position the Fortuner alongside the Active, Sport and Platinum variants of the Ford Everest. The Everest Platinum+, powered by a V6 engine, is priced at VND 1.629 billion.
In addition to simplifying the range, the withdrawal of the diesel-powered Fortuner variants could indicate preparations for the arrival of the model's next-generation replacement. Internationally, Toyota is preparing a new Fortuner featuring updates inspired by the latest Toyota Hilux, with the model widely expected to be introduced in Vietnam in the future.
