The right-hand-drive version of Firefly, the compact car brand under Nio, has made its debut at the 2026 Hong Kong Auto Show ahead of its upcoming launch in the local market.
The model is the first right-hand-drive vehicle introduced by Nio. According to Firefly, the vehicle's exterior design, cabin space, and active and passive safety features were highlighted at the event. The auto show is being held at AsiaWorld-Expo in Hong Kong and will run until June 22nd. Firefly's stand is located at R14 in Hall 9.
Vehicles operating on Hong Kong roads are predominantly right-hand drive, unlike those in mainland China, where left-hand-drive vehicles are used. As a result, a right-hand-drive version is required for entry into the market.
Nio is implementing an asset-light distributor partnership model in overseas markets. The Hong Kong market is expected to adopt a similar approach to that used in Macau. In 2025, Nio established a partnership in Macau, appointing Guangdong Hongyue Automobile Sales Group as its sole general distributor in the market.
The group is responsible for the market operations, user services, and brand ecosystem development of Nio's three brands - Nio, Onvo, and Firefly - in Macau. The Firefly EV is the lowest-priced model in Nio's portfolio, with a starting price of CNY 119,800 (US$ 17,730) in mainland China.
Nio launched the right-hand-drive version of the Firefly EV in Singapore in January this year and introduced the model in Thailand in March. Firefly has entered more than 10 overseas markets and plans to expand gradually into nearly 40 countries and regions, including Europe, the United States, and Southeast Asia.
However, Nio has recently slowed the pace of its international expansion. The company's founder, chairman, and chief executive officer, William Li, stated in May that Nio would not withdraw from overseas markets but would adopt a more cautious approach when evaluating returns on investment.
Li also reiterated that Nio intends to make greater use of local partners in its future overseas operations.
According to data compiled by media sources, the Firefly brand deliveries in May accounted for 15.02% of Nio's total deliveries during the month. Between January and May, the brand's vehicle deliveries represented 14.77% of Nio's total deliveries during the same period.
