Despite sluggish market, bestselling cars being discounted

Although consistently among the best-selling models and ranking high in monthly sales, many cars such as the Toyota Vios, Hyundai Accent, and Honda City are still subject to discount strategies by manufacturers and dealers to attract customers.
Due to the overall economic difficulties, the Vietnamese car market at the beginning of 2025 is not looking promising; sales have declined, and there is leftover inventory from the previous year. To create a solid foundation for the months ahead, many manufacturers and dealers have continuously launched promotional programmes and discounts aimed at boosting sales. Notably, not only models with low sales and limited appeal are being discounted, but even the best-selling models at the top of the rankings are also seeing price reductions.
1. Honda City
Despite being Honda's best-selling model and the highest-selling B-segment sedan in January 2025, the City is still benefiting from a 50% reduction in registration fees in February 2025. This discount translates to approximately VND 25 - 28.5 million (about US$ 980 - US$ 1,120), effectively lowering the actual selling price of the Honda City to between VND 474 - 541 million (approximately US$ 18,560 - US$ 21,190).
Currently, in Vietnam, the Honda City is available in three versions: G, L, and RS, priced between VND 499 - 569 million (before discounts). In January 2025, Honda sold 568 units of the City, leading the B-segment sedan category.
2. Hyundai Accent
Also a top-selling model for the Korean manufacturer in Vietnam and ranked 10th in the Top 10 best-selling cars for January 2025, the Hyundai Accent is similarly seeing a 50% reduction in registration fees, amounting to about VND 22-34 million (approximately US$ 861 - US$ 1,330).
For vehicles manufactured in 2024 (VIN 2024), some dealers are willing to offer additional discounts and gifts, totalling up to VND 45 million (about US$ 1,760), bringing prices down to just over VND 400 to 525 million (approximately US$ 15,680 - US$ 20,600). This pricing is comparable to some A-segment vehicles in Vietnam, such as the Hyundai i10 and Kia Morning.
According to Mr. Nguyễn Đăng Dương, a sales staff member at a Hyundai dealership in Hanoi, the first two months of 2025 represent the most sluggish period for the car market. Therefore, if they do not reduce prices to sell off the 2024 stock, the vehicles will depreciate further and incur losses. It is better to sell now than to let the inventory linger, not to mention the additional costs associated with parking, maintenance, and bank fees.
In Vietnam, the Hyundai Accent has four versions (MT, AT, AT Special, and AT Premium) with prices ranging from VND 439 - 569 million (before discounts).
3. Toyota Vios
The Toyota Vios was the best-selling sedan in Vietnam in 2024, with 14,210 units sold, and it has been a strategic model for the Japanese manufacturer for many years.
However, at the start of 2025, its sales have not been strong, falling behind competitors Honda City and Hyundai Accent, with only 490 units sold in January. This sales figure places the Toyota Vios third in the B-segment sedan category.
Perhaps because of this, in February 2025, Toyota has applied a 50% reduction in registration fees for all versions of the Vios. With a selling price ranging from VND 458 - 545 million (approximately US$ 17,950 - US$ 21,390), the support translates to around VND 23-27 million (about US$ 900 - US$ 1,060). After applying the promotion, the price of the Toyota Vios drops to only VND 435 - 518 million (approximately US$ 17,070 - US$ 20,300).
In Vietnam, the Toyota Vios is offered in three versions: E MT, E CVT, and G CVT, with prices ranging from VND 458 - 545 million (before discounts).
