Denza is expected to enter the Indian market by the end of this year with two models, the Z9 GT fastback and D9 MPV.
The development follows earlier information that BYD's luxury brand was preparing to enter India, with the D9 initially expected to spearhead the launch. Denza will be positioned above BYD's existing portfolio in India, with its products expected to be priced at around Rs. 8 million (US$ 83,445) and above.
BYD's existing models will continue to occupy the Rs. 2 million to Rs. 8 million price range. Both Denza models will be imported as completely built-up units.
About Denza
Denza was founded in May 2010 as a joint venture between BYD and Daimler AG, now Mercedes-Benz Group AG. The company announced the Denza brand name two years later. Mercedes-Benz subsequently exited the partnership, while BYD repositioned Denza in 2022, with the brand's focus shifting towards the higher end of the market.
The name Denza is an invented term that loosely translates to 'rising power' or 'gathering momentum'.
Z9 GT: Fastback
The Z9 GT will join the D9 as part of Denza's initial India portfolio. Denza describes the model as a shooting brake, combining a fastback design with four-door practicality. It is available globally with electric and plug-in hybrid powertrains, although the electric version is expected to be offered in India.
The Z9 GT weighs 2.9 tonnes and produces 1,172 PS from three electric motors, with one motor at the front and two at the rear. The motors enable a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 2.7 seconds and a top speed of 270 km/h. Its claimed range is 600 km on the combined WLTP cycle.
It supports Denza's 1,500 kW Flash charging system, which can charge its 122.5 kWh battery from 10 to 97% in nine minutes. Charging is limited to 97% to help preserve battery life. The Z9 GT is expected to be priced between Rs. 12 million and Rs. 15 million in India.
The Z9 GT uses a cell-to-body construction that integrates the Blade cells directly into the vehicle structure. Other features include rear-wheel steering with a sideways crab-crawl capability, buttons for opening and closing the power doors, and Level 2+ ADAS.
The cabin accommodates five occupants, with the four outer seats offering adjustable under-thigh support, heating, cooling and massage functions. The rear seats also recline. The dashboard features five screens, including two displays on the flanks that show feeds from cameras replacing conventional outside rear-view mirrors.
D9: Vellfire rival
The D9 MPV, which was previously expected to spearhead Denza's India launch, will now form part of the brand's two-model initial portfolio alongside the Z9 GT. It is available globally with electric and plug-in hybrid powertrains. In India, the electric version is expected to be introduced in front-wheel-drive form, with prices expected to be around Rs. 8 million. This would position it above the MG M9 but below the Toyota Vellfire.
The D9 produces 317 PS and 360 Nm of torque and is powered by a 103 kWh Blade cell battery. Its claimed range is 520 km on the combined WLTP cycle, while DC fast charging supports speeds of up to 200 kW.
The seating configuration is 2+2+3, with the centre captain seats offering full power adjustment, heating, ventilation and massage functions. Control pads are integrated into the armrests, while middle-row occupants also receive fold-out tables and extendable leg rests.
Other features include three-zone climate control, a Dynaudio sound system and full leather upholstery.
The D9 also uses BYD's cell-to-body construction, which is designed to reduce weight and increase body rigidity. The MPV is equipped with an active body control system that, according to the company, eliminates fore-and-aft pitching motion and keeps the cabin level during 'nose-up' acceleration and 'nose-down' braking forces.
Denza's position in India
BYD is seeking to establish Denza in India alongside its existing operations, with the new brand aimed at the luxury segment.
BYD, the world's largest EV manufacturer, has faced restrictions related to Chinese investments in India, limiting the expansion of its operations. Its proposed $1 billion investment, along with a local partner, to scale up its small semi-knocked-down (SKD) plant in Tamil Nadu has been slowed by Press Note 3. Introduced in 2020, the policy requires foreign investments from countries sharing a land border with India to receive prior government approval.
With the scope for expansion limited, BYD is also entering segments such as MPVs. The segment accounts for about 2,000 units annually and has recorded increasing customer interest and growth. Models such as the Toyota Vellfire, Lexus LM and Mercedes V-Class currently compete in this category.
The D9 will therefore enter a segment with several established competitors, while the Z9 GT will operate in a smaller niche, with the Porsche Taycan serving as a comparable rival. The Z9 GT is likely to record lower sales volumes than the D9, but it will also provide a means of demonstrating Denza's technology and establishing the brand in India.
Denza will be retailed through exclusive showrooms separate from BYD outlets. Given the expected sales volumes, this could result in a relatively small retail network. The company intends to provide Denza customers with a more personalised purchasing experience, with the brand's positioning expected to limit its network to larger cities. The initial launch is likely to cover the Delhi-NCR and Mumbai regions.
BYD plans to expand its own network while keeping the two brands separate, allowing each to focus on its respective objectives. BYD India has established a presence in the market, with brand awareness exceeding its current market volume. Its product portfolio includes technologies such as Blade cells. For Denza, establishing recognition in the luxury segment will be an additional consideration, where brand value can play a significant role alongside engineering and technology.
