Self-parking vehicles, amphibious SUVs, and ultra-fast charging speeds - the future of the automotive industry is no longer a distant prospect; it is already a reality. BYD, China's leading electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer, is at the forefront of this transformation.
BYD's expansion plans in Brunei
BYD continues to redefine the mobility landscape with innovations that resemble scenes from a science fiction film. Now, the company has set its sights on Brunei.
A delegation of local and international press representatives witnessed this transformation first-hand during the BYD press conference in China, held from 17th to 24th March.
The highlight of the visit was the Test Drive Day on 22nd March, where journalists had the opportunity to experience BYD's range of electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles, each equipped with advanced technology.
Upcoming models for Brunei
Among the most anticipated models were the BYD Shark and BYD Sealion 7, both set to debut in Brunei.
The Shark, scheduled for launch in May, 2025, demonstrated its strength and off-road capabilities by effortlessly tackling rugged terrain and makeshift inclines.
It is the world's first plug-in hybrid double-cabin truck featuring DMO (Dual Mode Off-Road) technology, delivering 435 PS and 650 Nm of torque, with an impressive 800-kilometre range.
The Sealion 7, a sleek electric SUV arriving in Brunei in May, 2025, impressed with its performance and modern design. Producing 523 PS and 690 Nm of torque, the Sealion 7 combines sustainability with power. Its striking OCEAN X front design gives it a commanding presence, while a full charge provides a range of 542 kilometres.
Advanced parking and safety technologies
Beyond speed and range, BYD also showcased its cutting-edge parking technology. The Denza Z9, built on BYD's E3 platform, demonstrated its ability to self-park with exceptional precision, manoeuvring into parallel spaces at the touch of a button. The rear wheels rotate independently, executing movements with such accuracy that the demonstration resembled a ballet on asphalt.
Additionally, vehicle owners can summon their car from a parking space using only a smartphone, adding to the convenience.
The Yangwang U8, an off-road luxury EV, also made a striking impression. Designed to float for up to 30 minutes in emergency situations, the U8 remains operational even when partially submerged. Equipped with individual motors for each wheel, it is capable of performing a 360-degree tank turn, demonstrating remarkable engineering innovation.
BYD's commitment to Brunei
Speaking at the conference, Liu Xueliang, General Manager of BYD's Asia-Pacific Auto Sales Division, emphasised the company's mission:
"The best products and latest technologies should not be reserved for a select few. We believe innovation should benefit everyone."
Although Brunei represents a relatively small market, Liu confirmed BYD's full commitment to supporting local demand. He said "initially, there were uncertainties about whether the Shark would gain traction in Brunei. However, after discussions with our local partner, Maju Motors, it became evident that the demand is there, and we are ready to meet it."
He further stated that Brunei is on track to becoming BYD's leading market in the region, a milestone that could be achieved as early as next year.
Manufacturing and global expansion
The press delegation also visited BYD's vast production facility in Zhengzhou, which surpasses the scale of Tesla's Nevada Gigafactory. Covering approximately 50 square miles, the factory currently employs 60,000 workers, with plans to expand its workforce by 200,000 globally.
With an annual production capacity of one million vehicles, the Zhengzhou facility is central to BYD's global operations.
Brunei's growing enthusiasm for EVs
Closer to home, Maju Motors, BYD's sole distributor in Brunei, was recently awarded the Best Sales Growth Award 2024 at the BYD Asia-Pacific Dealer Conference in Shenzhen. This recognition underscores the increasing interest in EVs and hybrid vehicles among Bruneian consumers.
The upcoming BYD line-up in Brunei is extensive. Alongside the Sealion 7 and Shark, the market will soon welcome the BYD Seal 05, a plug-in hybrid sedan equipped with DMI (Dual Mode Intelligence) technology, offering an impressive 1,240-kilometre range on a single charge. Producing 197 PS and 325 Nm of torque, it is designed for both long-distance and urban travel.
Additionally, Maju Motors is preparing to introduce BYD's premium marques in Brunei, including:
- Denza (D9, N9, Z9)
- Fangchengbao (Bao 5, Bao 8)
- Yangwang U8
Conclusion
The insights gained from the media trip affirm a clear reality: the EV revolution is no longer on the horizon - it has already arrived. With BYD's continuous advancements in technology and its expanding presence in Brunei, the transition to electric mobility is well underway.
